THE GREAT BEAR RAINFOREST SAFARI
The Rainforest Safari is the ultimate Canadian wilderness experience. Journey through the Inside Passage into the highly biodiverse ecosystem of the Great Bear Rainforest. Home to the rare white “Spirit Bear,” this global treasure is the largest coastal temperate rainforest in the world. We are privileged to have forged a personal relationship with a local Gitga’at Spirit Bear keeper who will escort us on a one-of-a-kind guided trip through their habitat.
During the month of September, five species of wild Pacific Salmon return to enter thousands of freshwater rivers. These salmon not only provide food for hundreds of bears, wolves, and eagles, but they also provide nutrients for the giant trees that grow in this temperate rainforest. As a result, these forests contain as much as four times the amount of life found in a tropical rainforest.
Our Rainforest Safari has its very own “Big Five” cast of characters: bears, wolves, whales, sea lions and eagles. Our mission? Try to spy all five within our five-night trip. Watch wide-eyed as multitudes of whales, porpoises and dolphins breach in the nearby water. Daily small boat excursions bring you deep into the rainforest’s wild beauty. Hike trails in search of the elusive Spirit Bear. Kayak through remote fjords hugging the shoreline. Visit historic First Nations cultural sites and tour remote villages.
Ultimately, this trip is about wildlife. We spend as much time as possible searching for bears and viewing whales. However, this is the Pacific Yellowfin, where you can spend your day reading a good book on the deck if you prefer.
