Komodo National Park

Located in the center of the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores, KNP is composed of three major islands (Rinca, Komodo, and Padar) and numerous smaller ones, all of them of volcanic origin.

Initially established in 1980, it's main purpose was to conserve the unique Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) and its habitat. However, over the years, the conservation gradually expanded to protecting its entire biodiversity, both terrestrial and marine. In 1986, it was declared a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, both indications of it's biological importance. The landscapes of the entire region are very unique and probably some of the most dramatic in all of Indonesia!
