Amakoro Songa Lodge

Amakoro Songa Lodge near Volcanoes National Park is conveniently located near the Park Headquarters and offers a relaxed, yet sophisticated atmosphere at reasonable rates. The main cottage houses the lodge’s restaurant and grass-thatched bar and lounge. A cozy fireplace in the lounge keeps guests warm during chilly nights. There is an outside balcony looking out to the impressive mountain views. An outdoor fireplace surrounded by amakoro stone seats is where everyone gathers for a drink, a story, and sometimes a performance from a local tribe. (songa)

Accommodations at the lodge consist of three cottages made up of one main cottage and two individual cottages. There are three king-sized beds and one pair of twin beds available. The spacious en suite bathrooms feature both a bath and a shower plus plenty of hot and cold running water. Each cottage comes with its own sitting area with the main cottage including a lounge with a cozy fireplace. The cottages also enjoy a private balcony with magnificent views of the mountains.

The gorilla treks are the main draw of the lodge. From the park’s headquarters, guests can take a one-hour guided hike through lush bamboo forests with the chance of spotting a fully-grown silverback gorilla, up to three times the size of an average man, yet remarkably peaceable and tolerant of human visitors. For an easier walk, there is always a golden monkey trek to watch these playful creatures jumping and climbing through the trees. Other nearby activities include a guided hikes of Mt. Bisake take a full day to reach the summit with rewarding views of the rainforest and crater. Nature and bird walks take in the other wildlife in the area.
