Lake Murray Lodge
Lake Murray is the largest lake in Papua New Guinea and located in the Western Province. On an island spit hidden among the trees is the new Lake Murray lodge. With a rich population of birds, fish and a unique culture, this lodge is an exceptional experience for travelers wanting to experience this remote PNG destination in comfort. This remote region is made up of island communities with stilted houses dotting the lakeshore and tiny islands. Dugout canoes are the primary mode of transportation here and fishing is a major source of food to the local population.
The Main Lodge with its wraparound veranda houses a dining room, lounge, bar and reception/tour desk. The veranda is the place to be for exceptional sunsets over the water. All of the buildings have made use of local materials and traditional building style with sago woven matting and timber providing a natural setting that fits in perfectly with this rustic location. In keeping with an eco-friendly philosophy, the entire lodge operation is powered with the latest green technology in solar power providing 24-hour electricity. Meals are simple, but delicious here with the lodge’s large garden providing fresh vegetables and fruit. Local fishermen provide the fresh catch from the lake with the kitchen staff cooks on a wood fired stove and outdoor grill.
An airstrip at the Lake’s government station provides air access to the area for small aircraft. Lake Murray is accessible with its own air service from either Mount Hagen or Ambua Lodge on Mondays, and Fridays
Accommodations include 12 individual cabins overlooking the lake. They are furnished with king, twin or double bed configurations plus ceiling fans, modern bathrooms and an elevated veranda so you can soak in the wonderful view of the lake.
.Lake Murray Lodge arranges excursions around the lake in 8-seat river boats to visit local villages, birding sites and fishing spots. PNG’s Western province is home to over 50% of New Guineas total bird population with Lake Murray being one of the best bird spotting areas in the Province. In addition to a host of migratory birds, several birds of paradise species, pelicans, hornbills, eagles, parrots and numerous other birds have been sighted. Lake Murray is also known for its Black Bass, Barramundi and Saratoga fish if you’d like to give fishing a try. You may also visit the small school and hospital in the surrounding area. The lake also has had sightings of its own "Nessie", believed to be a relative of the Theropod dinosaur family.
