Saruni Eagle View

Sitting on the shores of a coral reef and surrounded by turquoise lagoons and traditional villages, Cap Karoso is a luxe launchpad for exploring the Indonesian island of Sumba. Let us be your guide as you soak in nature, culture and some more indulgent delights.

The heart of Cap Karoso is its biological farm. Covering three hectares of rehabilitated land, the farm produces nearly all the fruits and vegetables we use in our restaurant and bar. Cabbages, tomatoes, and mangos are just a small taste of what’s ripening within steps of your room.

In the setting of a traditional Sumbanese house, experience spa rituals derived from local shamanic healing techniques. Some treatments incorporate natural ingredients with beauty-boosting benefits, such as hibiscus, island herbs, and sea salt. Let the mind and body blissfully sink into a deeper sense of wellbeing.

More than a place to rest your head, our 47 rooms and 20 villas will ignite your interest in Sumbanese heritage. At Cap Karoso, age-old craft and contemporary art and design come together to tell the story of the island.

Cultural Exploration

Cap Karoso is located in Kodi, a part of Sumba Island that’s a world of its own. Here, time stands still. The lives of villagers run according to the rhythms of sacred ceremonies and the words of Ratos – local shamans. These are living traditions of an ancient religion rooted in animist beliefs called Marapu. With the help of local communities, experience pieces of this long-preserved culture, including traditional fishing, ikat weaving, and Sumbanese sandalwood horse riding.

Water

Enjoy the awe-inspiring diversity of waters that surround the resort. Swim or snorkel in peaceful Karoso Lagoon, catch a perfect wave in Pero, fish with locals, or dive into the tantalizing turquoise of the Weekuri saltwater lake.

Land

Cap Karoso is surrounded by spectacularly unspoiled nature that’s home to a multitude of indigenous species. This is the kind of terrain that’s sure to call out to your adventurous spirit. Hike or bike to explore a landscape diverse enough to include both tropical forests and savanna, waterfalls, and dry plains. Get lost, then find your way like a true explorer.

Mindfulness

Soak up the restorative energy of Sumba to find a heightened sense of freedom and calm. Here, a hike is an ideal opportunity for a mindfulness session. Surround yourself with the still, yet ever-changing landscape of the island. On the beach, by the cliffs, or in our yoga pavilion, take time to align your mind and body. Yoga and meditation classes are offered daily.

Sumba Island is an hour by plane from Bali, with daily flights out of Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar to Tambolaka Airport in Sumba. Flights from Jakarta and Labuan Bajo are also available. Once you land in Sumba, Cap Karoso is just a 40-minute drive from Tambolaka Airport. We will be happy to assist you with booking the tickets for the local flights and arranging the transfer from the airport in Sumba.
