Diving Blackbird Caye

Kirsten and Amazing Adventures Travel has been arranging trips for us for years and we have never been disappointed. My recent trip to Blackbird Caye Resort in Belize was no exception. My accommodations, an over-water cabana, was cozy and immaculate. The dining hall was wonderful with beautiful wood floors and great food with buffet for breakfast and lunch and a sit-down dinner served by friendly and efficient staff. They worked diligently to accommodate my gluten-free diet.

Most importantly, though, was the excellent dive operation. Dive boats are roomy and nice with a bin for cameras. There was no table for cameras but the crew handled my gear with care. Divemasters will change your tanks for you between dives and are friendly and safe. The coral was surprisingly healthy and abundant, with a good variety of dive sites. We saw a manatee on our first dive and in general saw several reef sharks, nurse sharks, white-spotted toad fish, eels, octopus (at night), southern rays, a huge whip-tailed ray and a few spotted eagle rays, several green sea turtles and a couple of hawksbills. The quantity of fish was not commensurate with the health of the coral but I have found that to be the case in the Caribbean in general.

Blackbird Caye is a 1 hour and 45 min boat ride from Belize City and feels lovely and remote. Turneffe Atoll, where Blackbird Resort is located, is a beautiful collection of mangroves and is protected by the Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association. The diving is easy and well-supported. I would dive there again.  Jana - July 2025
