Monachira Camp

Monachira is named after the Monachira channel which flows past the island on which the camp is situated. The camp is raised on wooden decks to give one a view of the floodplains and wetlands which stretch out in front of camp. Monachira offers water activities, island nature walks and wildlife drives.

Based in the Moremi Game Reserve, these activities will take you to some of the more remote areas in the delta. A motorboat ride promises to enthrall you and captivate you, with the chance of seeing iconic wildlife from the river. Glide on quiet mokoro’s through the water lilies and view wildlife from below as you sail along at water level height.

The camp is situated on the edge of the Monachira channel not far from the famous Gudigwa heronries, offering great viewing of this amazing nesting ground of thousands of herons, egrets and storks. A chance to see elephants, lions, leopard and a wide variety of Okavango species on the islands and floodplains along the permanent channels of the Monachira river. Also, a chance to see the elusive Pels Fishing Owl and rare sitatunga, a semi aquatic swamp antelope.

Inspired by classic safaris and infused with a modern flair, Monachira Camp seamlessly blends nostalgia with contemporary luxuries. Our double and family designer tents each contain an en-suite bedroom with modern bathrooms, patio deck and relaxation area, offering ample space to unwind in your own privacy. Shaded by the island forests, our 10 tents are ideally positioned overlooking the vast floodplains while offering unparalleled views of the wildlife frequenting the surrounding wetlands. (machaba)

Mokoro
Inspired by native local people who used traditional wooden mokoros as a form of transport, a modern version of this dugout canoe is an exceptionally relaxing way to explore the reed-lined waterways and discover different creatures you wouldn’t typically see from a vehicle or on foot.

Boating Safaris
Cruise through the calm waterways of the Okavango Delta or the Chobe River system, exploring the most remote, untamed sections of their tributaries. While boating in the Okavango Delta is seasonal, and usually available between May and August when the water levels are higher, the Chobe River offers year-round boating safari opportunities. Observe the iconic behavior of wildlife as they swim, drink, and bask along the banks of the tributaries, all from the safety of a boat.

Nature Walks
Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Okavango Delta with a guided island walk at Monachira. Led by expert guides, this experience awakens your senses as you tread softly across the island, unlike any other safari, exploring on foot offers an intimate perspective of the delta’s ecosystem. Here water levels shape the terrain, each walk is unique, revealing the intricate balance of life in this permanent water paradise.

Birding
In southern Africa bird lovers are spoilt for choice when it comes to birdwatching. The region’s wealth of varied habitats attracts a vast range resident and migratory species and with easy access to the renown Godikwe Heronry Monachira is a birders paradise.
