Otavalo, known for the famous “Los Ponchos” market, is a must-see destination in Ecuador, as it houses the largest fair of indigenous handicrafts and textiles in all of South America. Hotel Otavalo is located in the center of the city in one of the oldest buildings. Its recent restoration catapulted its status to be the only luxury hotel within Otavalo. The innate history of the city is reflected in the evolution of its construction, which gives the hotel the aura of a castle. Hotel Otavalo incorporates the pure essence of a Boutique Hotel that offers its guests the comfort and hospitality of 5-star accommodations.
The name of the restaurant, Sarance, is how the native indigenous residents referred to the town now known as Otavalo. Located within the foundation of the hotel, guests can enjoy a journey of flavors in their own comfortable cavern, with each dish presenting different provinces of Ecuador. The dining program is a journey through the gastronomy of Ecuador. The menu offers a gourmet interpretation of homemade Ecuadorian recipes. Every day you will discover a different dish representing one of the geographical provinces of the country. Each provincial plate exhibits the principal flavors of each regions’ ethnicity and culture.
Located in the midst of the Andean highlands, our rooftop bar ÑUKANCHIKWAN TAKI invites a celebration! The name translates to “come celebrate with us” in the native language, Quichua. Live unforgettable evenings enjoying our traditional regional cocktails, local delicacies and live music meanwhile admiring the commanding Taita Imbabura volcano. The rooftop bar and terrace not only has a magical view but also a dedicated staff that will turn your experience into an unforgettable moment.

ANDEAN INSTRUMENTS AND MUSICAL INTERPRETATION
Taita Gundo is a family project directed by the prestigious musician Ali Lema that was born from the need to rescue the construction, elaboration and interpretation of musical instruments of the Andes such as pingullos, dulzainas, quenas, quenachos, quenillas, rondadores, pallas, sikuris, as well as antaras and zampoñas which are especially representative of the Imbabura province.
DREAM CATCHER
The origin of dream catchers is known to be North American, although the art form currently extends from North America to the south of Chile. However, in Ecuador, objects very similar to the original dream catcher have been found hung in ancient houses thus indicating prior cultural exchanges between the Eagle (North American natives) and the Condor (South American natives).
WISDOM AND TRADITION
In the Parroquia de San Juan de Ilumán traditional sheep wool hats are made for the Quechua peoples: Otavalo, Kayambi, Saraguro and Natabuela. Each model has different characteristics allowing the identification of which indigenous people each person belongs to. The use of hats constitutes part of the indigenous culture, as it is part of the daily apparel of both men and women. From the worldview of the taitas (parents), the hat signifies ‘wisdom’. Therefore, children do not use it daily, but only during special ceremonies.
ANCESTRAL GASTRONOMY
Husband and wife team Claudia and Patricio, of a Quechua Otavalean family, are dedicated to presenting experiences in ancestral gastronomy. Located in the Panecillo community, in the Parish of Quichinche, Canton Otavalo ‘Kawsaymi’ is Quichua for “our living culture.” The word summarizes the family’s focus on promoting the original cuisine of their ancestry, and also presenting their customs to visitors in order to create playful, exciting, and one-of-a-kind experiences.
ANCESTRAL FABRICS
In the community of La Compañía, by San Pablo Lake, visit a family dedicated to weaving on traditional looms. With skill and creativity they make girdles that differentiate the meaning of indigenous clothing through color and design; preserving this ancestral activity in their family tradition.
