Welcome to Explora El Calafate — where ice, wind, and memory converge. From this remote lodge in the Chorrillo Malo estancia, surrounded by the silent vastness of the Patagonian steppe, explore the lesser-known wonders of this vast land. With sweeping views of the pampas, the Andes, and a distant glimpse of the Perito Moreno Glacier, each exploration invites deep connection and minimal impact. Here, Patagonia reveals its essential power — vast, timeless, and profoundly moving.
Designed by Chilean architect José Cruz Ovalle, Explora El Calafate was created to blend seamlessly with the vast Patagonian steppe. Natural materials, organic forms, and expansive windows connect the lodge to its surroundings, inviting Explora travelers to feel part of the landscape rather than observers of it. Every space reflects our philosophy of simplicity, comfort, and deep connection with nature.
With 20 thoughtfully designed rooms (standards & suites), the lodge blends comfort and elegance with authentic sense of place, creating a basecamp that embodies the spirit of exploration and the joy of returning home. Each room is a haven of calm, set between the steppe and native forests. Wildlife moves freely, undisturbed. A comfortable desk invites quiet moments of reading or reflection, while the surrounding silence makes space to reconnect—with nature and yourself.
From Explora El Calafate, travelers can experience the iconic Perito Moreno Glacier from a unique perspective, with carefully curated explorations crafted in Explora’s signature style. Beyond the glacier, more than 30 explorations—on foot, horseback, or by overland vehicle—uncover the vastness of the Patagonian steppe, hidden valleys, and pristine lakes. Designed for all activity levels, each expedition is led by expert guides and thoughtfully crafted to deepen your connection with the land, its history, and its profound silence.
El Calafate can be visited year-round, but the prime season runs from October to March when daylight stretches up to 16 hours and temperatures average 15 to 20 °C. Summer is ideal for glacier walks and long days outdoors.
Spring, beginning in September, sees the steppe coming back to life with wildflowers, milder winds, and excellent conditions for hiking before peak season arrives. Daytime highs climb to around 10–14 °C, while nights can stay chilly at 0–3 °C.
Autumn, from March into April, brings softer light, golden colours and quieter trails, ideal for photography and slower explorations. Expect daytime temperatures of about 12–16 °C in March, falling to 10–12 °C in April, with nights dipping to around 3–6 °C.
