Cerralvo — known to many as Jacques Cousteau Island — sits at the heart of what Cousteau himself called “The World’s Aquarium.” This marine hotspot boasts vast aggregations of mobula rays, resident pods of dolphins and sea lion colonies, migrating blue, fin, and humpback whales. Then spring arrives, along with the apex predator that makes this one of the most thrilling cetacean encounters in Mexico — orcas.

We explore these waters aboard a 48-ft fast boat on daily naturalist-guided ocean safaris, with opportunities to swim or snorkel at scenic spots along the way. Plus, orca-permitted pangas give you the best chance of epic wildlife encounters. Back on the island, the coastline is yours to enjoy — by kayak, snorkel, or on foot.

Marine life of Cerralvo Island: why this is Baja's premier pelagic safari
What makes a Cerralvo Island expedition different from anywhere else in the Sea of Cortez? The secret is simple: it comes down to geography.

Deep underwater canyons and powerful open-ocean currents meet, pushing nutrient-rich water to the surface. This fuels a truly extraordinary food chain and draws pelagic species in from the open ocean. Sitting near the entrance to the Sea of Cortez, virtually everything that moves through these waters passes Cerralvo.

Mobula rays are present year-round, but between April and June, thousands migrate through the channel between the Pacific and Gulf of California — forming vast, shimmering aggregations that have to be seen to be believed. For orcas, they’re an irresistible target.

Transient pods of orcas hunting in the open water make the Cerralvo Island orca experience one of the most remarkable in Mexico. Dolphins and sea lions are constant companions in these waters — and an absolute joy to witness. Beyond the headline species, this whole area is teeming with life, from reef fish and sea birds to silkies and seasonal whale sharks.

Can we guarantee sightings?
Honestly? No — and with decades of experience in these waters, we’d never pretend otherwise. What we can do is put you in the right place at the right time, with guides and captains who know these waters inside out. We note animal movements, follow the conditions, and make smart calls in real time. The rest is up to nature. No feeding schedules, no glass panels, no guarantees. These are wild animals in a wild ocean.

Science and conservation airplane
From January to November, our marine biologists conduct observation flights over the Sea of Cortez and Magdalena Bay to support science and conservation efforts, and to better understand and appreciate this remarkable region we work in. We operate multiple flights every week, each including several low passes over all of our boats and camps in the area.

ACTIVITIES
What you'll do: ocean safari, snorkeling & kayaking
Every morning begins on the water during this wild Sea of Cortez glamping experience.
Daily safaris take you offshore in search of whatever the ocean has to offer — and Cerralvo rarely holds back. Snorkelling opportunities arise throughout the day, from drifting through mobula ray aggregations to exploring rocky reefs alive with fish.

Back at base, this deserted, uninhabited island is yours to explore at your own pace. A beautiful reef sits right off the beach in front of camp, calling for a swim or a freedive, or, if you brought your gear, a scuba dive. Feel encouraged to kayak or paddleboard along the undisturbed coastline, join one of our naturalists for a hike, or simply watch the seabirds work the surface.
In the evening, unwind with marine life presentations from our naturalists, book a relaxing massage, or simply take in the sunset with a freshly prepared mojito in hand, before settling in under a star-filled sky.

The Trip
Day 1 – Arrival in Baja California Sur
Fly into either Los Cabos (SJD) or La Paz (LAP). Guests arriving in Los Cabos meet at SeeCreatures Cabo for a complimentary transfer to La Paz. If you’re flying into La Paz directly, we can either pick you up from your hotel or you can meet us directly at Baja Expeditions HQ. Your adventure begins with welcome drinks, meeting your naturalist and fellow adventurers, and dinner, followed by an overnight stay at Hotel Catedral (or equivalent), where we’ll run through the days ahead and all the activities to come.

Day 2 – Ocean Safari & Glamping on Isla Cerralvo
Check out of the hotel (we will store your suitcases). Depart at 7:00 AM for Pichilingue to board the 48-ft fast boat and set out for your first morning ocean safari, with breakfast onboard. Let’s see what the safari brings with fingers tightly crossed for big critters.

We will arrive at your glamping camp in time for drinks and a late lunch and some beach relaxation. Your choice of activities this afternoon. Maybe go kayaking or paddleboarding, swimming or snorkeling, or a beach walk or desert hike with your naturalist. For more relaxation, consider a massage, or head out on another ocean safari. If orcas appear in the restricted-access zone between Isla Cerralvo and La Ventana, we recommend joining one of our orca-permitted pangas for a possible interaction!

Return to camp in the late afternoon for bartender-prepared drinks at our beach dive bar. Dinner follows, along with an evening presentation. Relax and swap stories under the beautiful, star-filled Mexican sky.

Days 3–4 – Ocean Safari & Island Exploration 
These two days follow a similar rhythm, starting with breakfast at camp before departing at 7:00 AM aboard the 48-ft fast boat to further explore the Sea of Cortez on ocean safaris. Enjoy more time for camp-based activities, plus evenings with marine life presentations by naturalists, cocktail hour, and more.

Day 5 – Final Safari Day & Departure
Enjoy a final ocean safari day before returning to La Paz between 5:00 and 6:00 PM, with a complimentary transfer to SeeCreatures Cabo departing shortly after. Alternatively, take advantage of our contract hotel rates and stay on a couple more nights in La Paz or Cabo for more adventures.
