The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs
Nomad Tanzania's Serengeti Safari Camp was the first of it’s kind. It was designed with a purpose in mind; to be in the best possible location to view the wildebeest migration as it covers hundreds of miles of the Serengeti National Park each year. So it should come as no surprise that it really hasn't changed much since it's early pioneering days.
The wildebeest move and this is what our Serengeti Safari Camp is all about - understanding the Serengeti seasons and game movements and mirroring them.
Each year, this little camp casts off from Lamai Serengeti and begins its own odyssey. Covering hundreds of miles and moving every couple of months (not during your stay) along a route that the herds have travelled for hundreds of years, Serengeti Safari Camp is where you come for your migration fix.
Since the days in the early 90s when this little camp started, it's been much copied, but never equalled. It is effortlessly comfortable - a home from home, where you want for nothing. But it's never been about luxury for its own sake. From the outset the focus has been clear. To deliver a superlative experience of the extraordinary wildlife in this part of the world without damaging the environment that has so inspired us over the years. (Nomad)
Meru-style en-suite tents
(5 ROOMS)
The Serengeti Safari Camp was one of the first camps to imitate the seasonal migration of the wildebeest migration, moving 4/5 times a year to be in the best possible location to see the herds. We have maintained the original pioneering feel of the camp and you can be assured of a comfortable bed, a hot shower and a flush toilet (we operate on strict environmentally friendly principles and use eco-flush loos which use very little water - 90% less than a conventional toilet, in fact).
There's a spacious bedroom and dressing area, with a sink and big jugs of cold water, and hot provided in the morning and evening or whenever you need it. The safari-style bucket shower is en-suite at the rear of the tent, as is the toilet.
The beds are comfy and made up with fresh linen and soft pillows. There are chairs on the verandah where you can relax and enjoy the unfettered view of Africa before you.
Meru-style family tent
(1 ROOM)
The family safari tents are perfect for families traveling with children. Designed to the same footprint and make up of our beautiful safari tents, they have two full size safari tents, each with their own ensuite bathroom and connected via an adjoining lounge area.
Game drives in search of the migration
The priority from Serengeti Safari Camp is usually to find the Great Migration. You'll set off early morning in a shared vehicle with one of our exceptional Nomad guides in search of the herds, and the plethora of other wildlife that call the Serengeti home. Depending on what everyone in your group fancies doing for the day, you'll either return for lunch in camp, before heading out again in the afternoon. Or, you may all decide to take a picnic lunch with you and spend the whole day exploring the Serengeti.
We always recommend that you consider a private car and guide so there are no limits to your game viewing – as you wont be sharing the vehicle with anyone else, you’ll be able to indulge your own interests…without having to endure other peoples.
LOCATION:
The camp moves seasonally 4 -5 times a year to follow the movements of the migration, but it will not move during your stay. Camp movements are pre-planned in an effort to be within reach of the wildebeest migration, but this cannot always be guaranteed given the unpredictability of nature and weather conditions.
SETTING:
We take great care over choosing a campsite but each one will be different! Always that little bit further from the crowds, in our own corner of Serengeti wilderness.
ACCOMMODATION:
6 large walk-in safari tents, with dressing room area separating the beds from the new eco-flush loos and safari bucket showers. There is a separate lounge and dining tent and a traditional safari fireplace for sundowners. The family tent has two en suite bedrooms and adjoining sitting area.
SEASONS:
December to April: the camp is on the southern Serengeti Plains with access to the main herds as they calve through February. Birding is excellent during this time, as is general game viewing. May to Early July: Moru Kopjes area, central Serengeti Plains, and Western Corridor. The migration patterns can be unpredictable at this time of year, but the wildebeest rut (May) and the crossing of the Grumeti River (June/July) are spectacular if caught. Mid-July to November: northern Serengeti close to either the Mara or Sand Rivers, offering great game viewing and crossings of either of the rivers. Late November: the camp heads south again, arriving on the southern Serengeti Plains around mid-December.
ACTIVITIES:
Shared twice daily game drives (with an option to upgrade to private car & guide for complete flexibility) in custom built 4WD vehicles. Opportunities to see the great wildebeest and zebra migration, large herds of plains game and the highest concentration of predators in Africa. Nomad guides are experienced and knowledgeable and great company on safari.
CHILD POLICY:
We are delighted to welcome children over the age of 8 at Serengeti Safari Camp.
GETTING THERE:
Fly by private charter, or scheduled flights to the nearest airstrip (varies according to the seasons)-or drive in 4WD safari vehicles form our other northern camps.
