Diving
A better dive centre, dive team and dive boats would be hard to find. The 5-star PADI centre is top-notch and caters to those just learning to dive up to seasoned underwater photographers and extreme divers. They are proud to offer a personalized service for guests, while at the same time having the capacity to welcome big groups of divers. Each diving day gives divers the option of diving on our house reef, along the coast of Dauin, off the speed boats, and most days we also offer half day trips to Apo Island. We keep dive groups small, with no more than 4 divers per Dive Master, to make sure divers get the personal attention and get to see the critters they deserve. Apo Island and the Dauin coast is our diving playground - Atmosphere boasts some of the best diving in the world, mixing world class muck diving with lush reef diving, walls, and macro diving. The Philippines is situated in the coral triangle – a marine area located in the western Pacific Ocean. It includes Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and Solomon Islands. Named for its staggering amount of corals (nearly 600 different species of reef-building corals alone), the region nurtures six of the world’s seven marine turtle species and more than 2000 species of reef fish. The coast of Dauin, where Atmosphere is situated, has excellent macro diving with many of the most interesting critters in the world. Often called “muck diving” the usually small critters are often found at dive sites with nutrient-rich volcanic sand. We are fortunate in Dauin to have pristine brown sand dive sites with very little trash. Many of the coveted animals here are masters of camouflage, making each dive a treasure hunt, and the use of great dive guides a must. Many underwater photographers come here to photograph some of the world’s most unusual critters.
Snorkeling
At Atmosphere Resorts & Spa in the Philippines, we welcome snorkelers on all our boat trips, with Apo Island being the most popular snorkeling trip. A beautiful island with lots of turtles, white sand and stunning coral reefs. Snorkeling can also be done off the beach on our amazing house reef – right in front of the resort – at any time. Many of our dive sites are excellent snorkeling sites with very shallow corals.
Have you always dreamed of seeing a whale shark? We take guests to swim and snorkel with the whale sharks in Oslob – snorkeling with these giants is an unforgettable experience. Snorkel equipment is available for guest use free of charge in our dive center. We also offer snorkeling classes for guests who have little experience but wish to learn. We have dedicated snorkeling guides at Atmosphere and we have life jackets available for the less experienced swimmers. Whale sharks or turtles? The choice is yours!
Stepping out of the resort, Negros Oriental is renowned for outstanding natural beauty and fascinating culture. The vast mountain ridge behind Atmosphere is home to many scenic lakes and thundering waterfalls and the local indigenous culture means there are a myriad of fiestas, carnivals and local markets to witness. Beautiful and mysterious islands with amazing snorkeling and the possibility to spot whales and dolphins are close by and the nearby City of Dumaguete is a university-town with a long breezy seaside boulevard and historical buildings. There is also more than meets the eye with plenty of activities within the resort to keep you busy, or just relax poolside or at the beach with a great book.
Atmosphere Soup Kitchen
Atmosphere Resorts sponsors a soup kitchen program that provides 85 children with a balanced lunch, 5 days a week, year round. The children are from one of the most impoverished areas in Dumaguete, 30 minutes away from the resort. The success of the program is owed to the mothers of the children who volunteer and run the program. The daily preparation, serving and clean-up is carried out by the mothers of the children eating. Atmosphere Staff visits ASK on a twice weekly basis and we’d be happy if you wanted to join us.
The Rush Zipline
The Rush Zipline is located near Valencia, 30 minutes from Atmosphere Resort, and the main attraction is a 600 meter long zipline cable with a choice of four riding styles: superman, tandem, sitting and inverted. Please be aware that the zipline has a weight limit of minimum 50 kilos and maximum 80 kilos (110 to 180 lbs).
Swim with Whale Sharks
Near Oslob village on Cebu Island, 1,5 hours away from Atmosphere by van and boat, a group of whale sharks congregate in a shallow bay. We will bring you there in an air-conditioned van and from the beach, you can step into a small boat and watch the whale sharks from the surface. Those who wish can get in the water and swim/snorkel with these gentle giants, however we follow the guidelines of WWF and do not permit scuba diving.
Walks & Treks & Biking
With nature and beautiful scenery on our doorstep, walking is sometimes the best way to experience the surroundings. Join Atmosphere on a morning walk, which can be a walk around Atmosphere where you can learn about the tropical plants and animals found in our gardens. For the stronger walker, a trek up the mountainside with picturesque views of coconut plantations and Apo Island welcome you. For the runner, there are good tracks up the hillside – ask Rae, Saila or Adam for their favourite tracks.
Yoga
Embraced by many, yoga can be practiced on a simple level for fitness and mental relaxation or on a deeper level to penetrate all aspects of life. At Atmosphere, both open and private yoga classes are held daily, from absolute beginners to intermediate and advanced. Yoga is held on our tree top yoga platform by the beach but can also be held in the privacy of your terrace or location of your choice.
Apo Island
Join Atmosphere for some excellent snorkelling in Apo Island. The marine sanctuary of Apo Island is only 30 minutes away by boat and we do trips there several times per week, weather permitting. The small fishing community on the island is welcoming and we may sometimes go ashore to explore the small village. Apo Island is surrounded by lush coral reefs with a myriad of turtles and colourful reef fish. It is an excellent spot for both the beginner snorkeler and experienced free diver.
Dumaguete City Tour
Dumaguete is a University town with several campuses, and it is the largest city of Negros Oriental. It is best known for being the home of Silliman University, which has a well-known marine biology laboratory. Dumaguete is also the principal seaport area with a wide commercial center and a famous boulevard. Also, for visitors, the old Bell Tower and oldest stone church in Negros Oriental are worth a visit. There is a big and bustling covered market in the midst of town and an anthropology museum housed in the oldest building of Silliman University.
Bais Dolphin and Whale Watching
Bais is a community north of Dumaguete, approximately 2 hours away. It borders on Tañon Strait, between Negros and Cebu islands, which is the natural habitat of several whale and dolphin species that you can watch from a boat early in the morning. You may encounter the Pan Tropical Spotted Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins and Long Snouted Spinner Dolphins, Melon Headed Whales, Short finned Pilot Whales, Pygmy Sperm Whales, Pygmy Killer Whales and Dwarf Sperm Whales.
Shopping Trips
Let us take you to the main handicraft centers in the area for souvenirs, local art and jewelry. Among the places worth visiting are Handumanan Handicrafts in Dumaguete and Noah’s (Negros Oriental Arts & Heritage) in Bacong where you can visit the stone carving workshop. We also like to pass by the big Dumaguete covered market, with its fruit, vegetables and fish markets, as well as flowers, baskets and stalls with everything under the sun.
Balanan Lake
Balanan Lake is a deep freshwater lake found in the mountains of Barangay Sandulot in Siaton, southern Negros. The lake is bounded by mountain ranges and fed by three streams, and the ride through the mountains is very scenic. Activities offered are kayaking, boat riding, and hiking along the pathways around the lake. Near the lakes are three man-made plunge pools, perfect for a refreshing swim after your walk. Do not miss the old Balete tree by the entrance.
Malatapay Market
Wednesdays at Malatapay Market are always abuzz with activity. This is a local meeting place 15 minutes away from Atmosphere, frequented by traders, merchandisers, shoppers and visitors. On display is food, vegetables and fruit, tools and household items as well as clothes and bags. But most interesting must be the livestock market: Cows, goats and pigs in abundance meet their fate here in the early morning. Come early to see the hustle and bustle, and spend some time relaxing at the Malatapay Pier with some sweet banana fritters and local coffee. Or why not sample some Lechon Baboy (roast pork) and a cold San Miguel beer?
Valencia Tour
See something else than the beach by visiting the small mountain town of Valencia, 30 minutes away from Atmosphere. There are many things to do and see in Valencia – the small town has a European feel with its town square and slightly cooler climate. While there, why not visit a fruit farm that grows a variety of tropical fruits such as the durian, rambutan, lanzones and mangosteen? Take a peak in a local home that has an impressive collection of WW2 memorabilia and finish the tour by going to the Forest Camp, a picnic site built next to a creek with eight man-made swimming pools.
Valencia Hot Springs & Waterfall
Another take on the Valencia Tour (see above) is to combine it with a visit to the Hot Springs and the Pulang Bato waterfall. The hot springs are naturally hot and slightly sulfurous, fed directly from the mountain into manmade hot pools, famed for their medicinal properties. The waterfall is named after the red rocks surrounding it and great for cooling off after a visit to the hot springs.
Kids’ Cove
Kids’ Cove is Atmosphere’s play centre, and it is situated by the entrance to the resort. During weekdays, it houses ONE International School, which caters to school children between 3 and 8 years of age.
