Dar Ahlam

Secluded by palm groves and almond trees at the edge of the Moroccan desert, this two hundred year old rammed earth Kasbah the color of Champagne is our original maison des rêves. Gracefully made over with all modern comforts and the necessary technology, this singular fourteen room hideaway overlooks the Atlas Mountains, with a palm shaded swimming pool, hammam and candle-lit massage room. Spend the night as a Berber would in an exquisite camp among the rippling desert dunes. An experience to be cherished forever.

Dar Ahlam is not so much a hotel as a team of over 100 people dedicated entirely to you. Meals are customized and served to you among a selection of distinct, private settings like our flourishing gardens by Louis Benech, the gifted designer of the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris and the Bosquet du Théâtre d'Eau at Versailles. Days at Dar Ahlam take shape around completely personalized adventures with your dedicated guide. Trek into the Valley of Roses, explore among the corn stalks and pomegranate trees of a nearby palmeraie and drive to the hilltop vestiges of a 12th century Berber village for a traditional tea ceremony at dusk. To all of these, we add elements of surprise.

The suites (choose from junior, superior or a villa that comes with a plunge pool) are vast chambers of cool tadelakt plaster hidden behind arched wooden doors that clunk reassuringly behind you. Sand and earth-grey tones echo the neutral, natural materials used for the furniture, while Berber rugs cozy up the floor. All have large fireplaces as well as air-conditioning, but none have televisions, so bring a book.

Guides can take you for walks around the oasis and to nearby valleys – that brighten up with almond blossom or rose blooms in season – for tented picnics in gorges next to cool, clear rivers. Alternatively, opt for an Arabian night adventure where you can sleep under the stars.

The spa and hammam is found by following masseurs down dim, candlelit corridors to a line of small, tiled treatment rooms consisting simply of a bed and a fire roaring behind a crenelated wooden screen.

You can take day excursions can be made to the Valley of the Roses, Dades or Draa Valleys, which are incredibly scenic. You can also set off on short day treks within the local area. Horse riding is also available. We love how they can set up little picnics in incredible locations, such as beside a nearby lake or up a small hill overlooking the palm groves.

Nomad Camp Experience

Sand dunes ripple in every direction as far as the eye can see. Welcome to Iriki, the ancient salt lake we transform into your seemingly endless sandbox, if only fleetingly.

Kick off your shoes and tap that inner child, by climbing up and racing down this magnificent sandscape. Encircled by the honey hued bluffs, your tent is an inviting retreat filled with African reed mats, Berber cushions and vintage camp decor, plus an en-suite bathroom with toilet, mirror and sink. Watch the desert light fade from atop a dune, aperitif in hand. Whenever you wish, meander back to camp along the path of lanterns. They lead to dinner by the campfire.

Dream under a sky awash in stars and rise with the first hints of the brilliant North African sun. Your breakfast table is poised to admire nature’s awe-inspiring morning ritual.
