Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave
A sacred and unrivaled adventure into the heart of Belize. The Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave tour begins with a trek that includes wading across three rivers. After 45 minutes, you arrive at the “Cave of the Stone Sepulcher,” one of the most impressive caves in the Maya lowlands. Located in the heart of the Belizean rainforest, in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, this cave was sacred to the Maya of Belize, who began to use the entrance during the Early Classic period. In later years, the Maya traveled deeper into the cave to conduct their ceremonies.
Tikal Maya Ruins
A legendary journey into a storied past. Tikal (“City of Echoes”) is the largest known city remaining from the ancient Maya civilization and was considered the greatest metropolis in the Maya kingdom. Situated in Guatemala’s largest protected area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it holds ruins comprising over 3,000 astounding structures set in 21 square miles (54 square kilometers).
Your day will begin with a prompt departure at 7 AM. Your Belizean guide will help you compare the border towns of Benque Viejo in Belize and Melchor de Mencos in Guatemala. On the ride to Tikal in Guatemala, you will be able to observe the differences between the two countries. You might see wild pigs, exotic birds in flight, and Maya dressed in traditional clothing and carrying oversized water pots on their heads.
At Tikal, you’ll be met by an expert Guatemalan tour guide, who will share extensive information about every aspect of Maya life as it existed from before 1000 BC until it fell after 1000 AD. Take a gentle amble through the rainforest’s primary growth and hear the famous howler monkeys. Sightings of spider monkeys as well as toucans and other exotic birds are also possible. Lunch is served in a local eatery before you head back to the luxury of Ka’ana.
Horseback Riding to Xunantunich
Take a scenic ride to the ruins. You’ll begin your journey at Hanna Stables, nestled within 400 acres of lush, green farmland. From there, you’ll make your way on horseback to the majestic site Xunantunich, where you’ll explore ancient ruins, including Maya temples, with your personal guide. Next, you’ll take in the sights and smells of the tropical rainforest as you picnic along the banks of the Mopan River before you meander back home.
Cave Tubing and Ziplining
Float and fly through the jungle. For the cave tubing part of this adventure, after being outfitted with the necessary equipment, begin a 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) trek through subtropical trails, wade across a shallow portion of the river, and pass through two caves before reaching a stunning lagoon surrounded by steep limestone walls. Along the way, your guide will point out various exotic flora and fauna native to Belize.
Float on an inner tube along the cool waters, illuminated by your headlamp. You will be gently pushed by the current or led by your guide into two large chambers—both impressive sanctuaries used by the Maya for sacrificial rituals. Plunge into darkness and listen to the sounds of the cascading waterfalls and bubbling rapids. Upon exiting the caves, continue floating along the jungle-lined river for approximately 30 minutes before returning to the starting point. Ziplining takes you soaring through the subtropical jungle canopy from treetop to treetop, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest below. A thrilling adventure, there are five runs at heights ranging up to 80 feet (24 meters). The trip culminates in rappelling down the last tree to the ground for that final adrenaline rush.
