Walks, Tracks & Hikes - Glacier Country
Glacier Country has walks and hikes to suit every fitness level and timeframe from short, easy 30 minute walks to three day hikes. As well as the many guided glacier walks available there are also various walks through native rainforest to enjoy, all in close proximity to the village and your Fox Glacier hotel. For more of a workout on a tramping track with hot pools at the end, check out the popular Copland Track. There are also cycling tracks that wind through stunning native bush from Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier townships to their respective glaciers. Directly across the road from Distinction Fox Glacier Hotel is the Department of Conservation (DOC) office which have information about the many walks, hikes and tramps in the Glacier Country area.

One of the best ways to experience the amazing Fox Glacier is on a guided glacier trip. Various tours depart daily from nearby Fox Glacier Guiding headquarters. All the equipment such as supportive hiking footwear is supplied at no extra cost on guided trips.
Flying Fox: Fox Glacier Helihike
Want the thrill of a helicopter ride as well as the chance to experience your own remote section of Fox Glacier? A short but exhilarating helicopter ride deposits you and your guide onto a remote area of the glacier, away from other groups, allowing you a 4 hour glacial experience like no other. The helicopter trip back provides an awesome vista of Fox Glacier as it grinds seaward.
Extreme Fox: All Day Helihike
Feeling amped? Then the Extreme Fox Heli-Hike is for you; spend an exhilarating day on the West Coast’s largest glacier and challenge yourself. After an awe inspiring helicopter flight in, forge your own unique trail through the dramatic terrain of Fox Glacier’s steep upper icefall. Expert guides will show and teach you how to use your technical climbing equipment.You might ford crevasses, use rope to travel or be lowered into and climb out of moulin (deep ice holes). You might climb and abseil down ice walls, or ascend short ice pitches, using ice axe and crampon climbing techniques. How much you do will depend on the day’s ice conditions and the level of ability of your small group (3-4 people).
Fox It Up: Fox Glacier Heli Ice Climbing
This day long experience introduces the adventurous to the exhilarating sport of ice climbing on the spectacular upper ice walls of the Fox Glacier. Whether you are a novice or an expert, your experienced guide will challenge you accordingly. Groups are kept small with a 1:4 guide to client ratio.
