Hiking

The hiking opportunities here are off the charts. Whether you go with a guided hiking tour or do it yourself day hike, you can choose from a variety of terrains, levels of difficulty and lengths. Here are a few must-do hikes in the region:

PEEKABOO-SPOOKY-BRIMSTONE - ESCALANTE

Rating: Hiking with a little scrambling

Length: 3-6 hours

Peekaboo and Spooky are the quintessential first slot canyon experience for many. Relatively easy access, incredible slots, and a short day make this a hike to bring the family on. These canyons are popular for good reason. The story goes the canyons received their names by a school group visiting from the town of Escalante around Halloween one year. The names fit, and this is a place that will make you feel like a kid again working through the fun slots. For the more energetic, it is a short distance down canyon to Brimstone, the fiercest of the 3 canyons in the area, and well worth the time to visit.

LOWER CALF CREEK FALLS - ESCALANTE

Rating: Easy trail walking

Length: 3-5 hours

Lower Calf Creek Falls is likely the most photographed and visited waterfall on the Colorado Plateau. It is a gem. The campground at the trailhead is a great place to camp and has water and restrooms. The hike is short enough to be family friendly and suitable for most and has interpretive markers along the way to point out the many sights. The trail is fairly shaded in spots, but I would still recommend an early start or doing it in the evenings in the summer months.

DEVILS GARDEN - ESCALANTE

Rating: Easy trail walking

Length: 1-2 hours

Devil's Garden seems to be an often overlooked gem. A short side trip from the Hole in the Rock road leads to a unique landscape of hoodoos and arches. This is one not to miss if you're in the area. Essentially a roadside attraction, visiting should be accessible to move everyone. A picnic area and pit toilet make this a good spot to have a family picnic.

ZEBRA AND TUNNEL SLOT - ESCALANTE

Rating: Easy Hiking

Length: 3-5 hours

Zebra and Tunnel Slot are both unique and distinct spots. Often photographed, Zebra lives up to its name with amazing pink stripes. Tunnel Slot, as the name implies, is a short section of slot resembling a tunnel. Bring your camera and the kids, this is a great family outing. The hike is reasonably short, with straightforward navigation. Though it can be brutally hot in the summer, it is still do-able with an early morning start or visiting in the evening. My preference is to visit in the fall or winter.
