Maniumpathy

Maniumpathy is a stately house, which has been home to five generations of a family originating in Jaffna. Its most recent owners have renovated it and transformed it into one of the boutique hotels in Colombo, with the intention of immersing its guests in an atmosphere reminiscent of the moods and pursuits of the people who have lived within its walls in those times past. With direct access to art, shopping, entertainment and dining, the hotel offers an oasis of serenity and luxury in busy Colombo making it one of the best hotels in this region. The house comprises of eight double rooms all named after the matriarchs who lived at the house over the generations, uniquely designed with antique furniture and fittings which exude heritage and luxury.

Guests can relax while taking a dip in the pool, reading in the library or enjoying a cup of tea in the private garden courtyard/balcony. The cuisine at Maniumpathy is Sri Lankan and International, based on freshest, locally sourced produce to offer guests wholesome, delicious food.

Maniumpathy is one of the best places to stay in the Colombo area, with all eight rooms named after the matriarchs of the family who have lived here. With all modern comforts you need, the rooms exude luxury and are styled with antique furniture and fittings, one-of-a-kind artifacts and elegant bedding. Rooms come with either four-post queen or king size beds and air-conditioning.

The Master, Annapuranie, a luxurious ground floor room that consists of a private lounge that can double as an extra double bedroom while the Family Room, Chrysanthie, is a split-level room where mezzanine floor doubles as lounge or extra double bed space.

The other Ultra Rooms (Cynthia, Ranee, Vasanthi, Anithra) have access onto a private balcony or garden courtyard ideal for more private dining and relaxing.

The Deluxe Rooms (Soundhari , Poornam) are a little smaller but all other amenities and standards of furnishing are to the same high standard.

CULTURE & HERITAGE

Make a memorable visit to Pettah Markets, a Colombo attraction. It is an explosion of taste, sight, and sound. From fresh fish to furniture to lace to stationary, one can basically get anything from here. It is hot and colorful, whizzing with vendors and movement.

Watch the sunset at Galle Face Green by the sea amidst children with kites and road side food vendors or head to Independence Square which was built to commemorate the independence from British rule and has recently become popular with the “get fit”.

For a taste of modern Sri Lankan art, visit the Sapumal Foundation which is home to a grand collection of art from the notable modern painters from the country and if you are interested in architecture the home of the renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa will grab you with its stark white walls off-set by green moss and foliage. Colombo National Museum is home to colonial armor, ancient thrones and masks and set in a magnificent white building with a lush garden with giant trees.

WORSHIP & ARCHITECTURE

Colombo is multi-religious and perfect for those wanting a spiritual awakening and the temples, churches, and mosques will also reflect the country’s architecture and culture.  From the many Buddhist temples scattered around the city, the Gangaramaya Temple stand out. It is opulent and eclectic and even houses a museum and is the central point of the annual Nawam Perahera.

The regal Sri Ponnambalam Vanesar Hindu Shiva Temple is peaceful and is carved and shaped from black stone and bustling with devotees on Saturday evenings. The Wolvendaal Church is impressive Dutch architecture and built like a fortress and one can spend many a hour exploring the nooks and corners and reading the descriptions at your feet. Although entrance to the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque is usually prohibited, the candy stripped exterior is impressive to say the least and worth a view if you are in the area

For the shopaholic in you, Colombo offers you a choice in both traditional and contemporary craft, textile, and precious and semi-precious stones, notably blue sapphires.

The foodie you will be excited to sample cuisine from all parts of the country in the capital where many restaurants and cafes offer a range of flavors and taste to match needs of any international traveler.
