In search of the Patagonia Puma
For four years, Amos Nachoum carried one photograph in his imagination: a wild puma moving through the mountains of Patagonia in winter—not simply a portrait, but an animal belonging completely to its landscape, perhaps a mother and her cubs crossing fresh snow beneath the immense skies of southern Chile.
The image sounded simple. Go to Patagonia. Find the puma. Make the photograph. Instead, plans stalled, departures cancelled, and research led to repeated disappointment. Eventually, he travelled to Patagonia last winter and encountered Raya, a wild puma raising her cubs, and took the photograph that has been in his mind for four years. However, what stunned Amos was no longer the photograph, but the incredible relationship and the story of coexistence on the working estancias’ landscape. Here, ranchers, conservationists and trackers are exploring ways for livestock and native predators to share the same land. People who once might have hunted pumas are now using their knowledge to find, study and protect them. For Amos, this evolving story of coexistence became the most meaningful thing from the journey.
This expedition was born out of that journey. In July 2027, Amos will return to Patagonia with an intimate group of five photographers. Over five dedicated tracking days, the group will explore Estancia Laguna Amarga with authorized puma guides and an experienced tracker, searching the ridges, valleys and open grasslands for pumas living freely in their natural environment.
Winter transforms Torres del Paine. The crowds recede, the landscape becomes quieter and more elemental, and low light moves across mountains that may be covered in snow. The days can be cold and demanding, and sightings can never be guaranteed. Yet it is precisely this uncertainty—the patience, anticipation and sudden appearance of a wild animal—that makes the experience so powerful.
Throughout the expedition, Amos will help guests read animal behavior, anticipate decisive moments and work creatively with light, weather and landscape. The aim is not simply to return with a close portrait, but to create photographs that reveal the puma’s place within Patagonia and the wider story unfolding around it.
Designed for professional photographers and committed enthusiasts, this is an opportunity to experience Patagonia at its wildest, develop your photography under Amos’s personal guidance and pursue an image that could exist nowhere else.
